Review by Martin Waller:
November 18th, 2008Casino Royale was said to have begun with nonstop action. Hang on because Quantum of Solace puts it to shame. It starts fast and continues to in many action scenes. You can catch a few scenes where it pays tribute to the earlier films like Goldfinger & Thunderball.
The action came in regular intervals. A series of action with a short scene of dialog that followed. Then it was followed by another action scene. I had just enough time to get my heart rate down when it ran back up again.
I still appreciate that in this series of Bond films that the gadgets don’t overwhelm the story. I thought that the Moore and Brosnan films had too much sci-fi technology.
The new films concentrate on the spy aspect more than the techno. In CR he had one gadget that came into play. In QOS, everything that was in the film does exist. Of course it is the best and newest but it is real.
This film could also be titled CR2 since it begins where the other left off and tries to tie up as many loose ends as possible. In some respects there is too much emphasis on some of the characters from CR but I guess it was necessary to complete the story line.
The globetrotting comes at a hard pace to keep up with. I think that Bond almost past himself he traveled so much so fast.
QOS had only one love scene, or maybe it was only half a love scene. Any way, Bond gets the girl and information as usual. It was good to see he kept his mind on his work after that.
The CIA operative came across as a little of a dope. Thank goodness Leiter was there to keep them on track. His boss seems like a total sell out or just an idiot that some how got up the ranks in the CIA. Leiter has been an important part of about half of the bond movies. I think he will play a bigger role in this new series of films.
I will still say that Craig is my pick for the No. 2 or 3 Bonds. Connery is always number one. I am undecided on whether it would be Craig or Brosnan for second place. Craig pulls off the action better than Brosnan but Brosnan has a slight edge in a tuxedo. Craig seems to move very well between all areas. From the formal to the rat holes, he adjusts to the scenery.
Judi Dench again does a marvelous job as “M”. I hope she continues. She is the perfect person to play opposite Craig.
They left the film ready for the next. After 45 years of Bond I will be there opening week.
