While work on the script was undertaken in 2009, the expected official announcement as Sam Mendes as the director of Bond 23 never happened. Instead EON Productions issued a press release stating that pre-production work would cease indefinitely until the situation at MGM had been resolved.
The problem for EON is that MGM is essentially bankrupt; as MGM are believed to own half of Danjaq, the parent company of EON, it isn’t a case of simply taking Bond 23 to another studio.
Meanwhile there is a split between the management and financiers of the studio over how the situation should be taken forward. The financiers are unwilling to acccept the offer currently on the table as it values MGM far below what they paid; they essential control the studio, but have no experience of the movie business.
Sam Mendes has indicated that he would still like to direct; but that all depends on when the deadlocked can be resolved.
James Bond will return… Details will be updated as they are released.
