On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
marks a return to James Bond’s roots in that
it closely follows Ian Fleming’s story, but is let down by the casting
of George Lazenby.
Slightly harder edged than Connery’s Bond had
ever been, Lazenby just doesn’t make the role his own, and in many respects
is a poor imitation of Connery, despite the realistic fight sequences.
However, there is some stunning Alpine scenery, plenty
of action and Telly Savalas does an adequate job in the role ofBlofeld.
Diana Rigg isn’t one of the most memorable Bond girls, and certainlynot
up to the standard of Honor Blackman, who like Rigg starred in The
Avengers on British television.
The score for On Her Majesty’s Secret Serviceis John Barry at his best and the minor arpeggio driven theme featuresthroughout. Although the theme is an instrumental, On Her Majesty’sSecret Service has a second, highly memorable theme sung by LouisArmstrong, We Have All The Time In The World.
