On Her Majesty's Secret Service marks a return to
James Bond's roots in that it closely follows Ian Fleming's
story, but is let down by the casting of George Lazenby.
Slightly harder edged than Connery's Bond had ever been,
Lazenby just doesn't make the role his own, and in many
respects is a poor imitation of Connery, despite the realistic
fight sequences.
However, there is some stunning Alpine scenery, plenty
of action and Telly Savalas does an adequate job in the
role of Blofeld. Diana Rigg isn't one of the most memorable
Bond girls, and certainly not up to the standard of Honor
Blackman, who like Rigg starred in The Avengers on
British television.
The score for On Her Majesty's Secret Service is
John Barry at his best and the minor arpeggio driven theme
features throughout. Although the theme is an instrumental,
On Her Majesty's Secret Service has a second, highly
memorable theme sung by Louis Armstrong, We Have All
The Time In The World.
