Joseph Wiseman dies

Joseph Wiseman, who appeared as the original Bond villain opposite Sean Connery, died on Monday at the age of 91.

Wiseman was born in Montreal in 1918, moving to the United States with his family as a boy. He had a long career in theatre, first appearing on Broadway in “Abe Lincoln in Illinois” (Robert E Sherwood, 1938).

Among his many other Broadway credits are “Joan of Lorraine” (1946), “Antony and Cleopatra” (1947) and the title role in “In the Matter of J. Robert Oppenheimer” (1969); his most recent Broadway appearance was in Judgment at Nuremberg in 2001.

Wiseman died on Monday at his home in Manhattan and according to the New York Times, he had recently been in declining health.
